A hat-trick by former Mumbai medium-pacer Wilkin Mota enabled Cricket Club of India to beat the previous year’s runner-up Payyade Sports Club by 86 runs to lift the late Padmakar Talim Shield conducted by the MIG Cricket Club. Unfortunately for Payyade, they fell at the final hurdle for the second year running in the 45-over tournament final played at the MIG ground,Bandra.

After winning the toss and electing to bat,CCI,however, were tottering at 70 for 6 at one stage and a title-win looked a long way away. But thanks to one-drop batsman Vinit Indulkar’s unbeaten knock of 80,which included five fours,CCI were eventually able to score 179 for 9—including the 15 penalty runs that they were awared as Payyade bowled one over short.

There were two wickets each for medium-pacers Sandeep Bhandari and Saurabh Netrawalkar and similarly for spinners,Dinesh Salunke and Vishal Dabholkar.

Chasing a modest total,Payyade made a poor start, losing their first three wickets in the early going, well before they even put 20 runs on the board. But it was in the eighth over of their innings that their hopes were crushed for good with Mota demolishing Payyade’s middle-order with a hat-trick. His victims were Rohan Bane,Onkar Khanvilkar and Parag Khanapurkar . Payyade never looked like recovering from these setbacks and were bowled out for just 98,lasting only 22.2 overs. Left hander Hiken Shah was the only one who even showed some fight,top-scoring with 30.

Mota finally ended up with sensational figures of 5/19 in just 5.1 overs. Seamer Rajesh Varma and left arm spinner Hitshu Bachani supported him well with two wickets apiece.
