Monsoon picking up after week-long lull: Met

After a dry spell for almost a week monsoon finally seems to be picking up again, the Met department said on Sunday.

After a dry spell for almost a week monsoon finally seems to be picking up again, the Met department said on Sunday. Weathermen said the city can expect showers on Monday and Tuesday with no significant change in temperatures.

The Met department had declared the onset of south-west monsoon in Mumbai last Sunday but the city remained mostly dry. However, there was relief on Saturday, with the weather department’s Colaba weather station recording 44 mm of rainfall between Saturday morning and Sunday morning, while Santacruz recorded 26 mm in the same period. Out of this,43.2 mm of rain was received by Colaba station in the 12 hours from Saturday night 8.30 pm to Sunday morning 8.30 am while Santacruz received 23.6 mm in the same period.

On Sunday too,the sky remained overcast for most of the day and rainfall was recorded in some areas in the evening. The Santacruz weather station recorded 8.2 mm rainfall between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm,while Colaba recorded 0.8 mm in the same period.

Weathermen attributed the absence of rain in the past few days to a weak monsoon current. “These showers are part of the monsoon getting activated again. However,it has not activated completely yet but we hope it will get strengthened on Monday and Tuesday,” said V K Rajeev, director, weather forecast,India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Temperatures slid on Sunday on account of some showers with the island city recording 31.40C,down from 34.40C the previous day while the suburbs recorded 31.80C,down from 33.20C. Minimum temperatures were 25.30C and 24.50C for Colaba and Santacruz respectively.

The IMD said rainfall this season in central India will be 96 per cent of the Long Period Average, which is considered normal.
