Moderate rain in Mumbai, Thane; IMD upgrades its forecast to yellow warning

INTERMITTENT SPELLS of moderate rains battered Mumbai and its neighbouring districts like Thane on Monday, nudging the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to upgrade its forecast to a yellow warning for the region. While no alerts have been issued for the city and neighbouring pockets on Tuesday, the weather bureau has said that light to moderate showers will continue to sweep the area over the next four days at least.
Ending the city’s spate of dry spell, Mumbai woke up to overcast skies on Monday with moderate spells of showers continuing throughout the day. Amid showers continuing into the afternoon, the IMD revised and upgraded its forecast bulletin for the day issuing a yellow alert of ‘heavy rainfall in isolated pockets’ on Monday for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar districts.
Starting 1 am on Monday, the IMD issued at least seven nowcast warnings for Mumbai throughout the day stating to the likelihood of moderate spells with gusty winds.
However, data furnished by the weather bureau showed that between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Monday, only light showers were observed in the region. The IMD’s Santacruz station in the suburbs received 7 mm rainfall while the Colaba coastal observatory registered 5.8 mm rainfall until Monday evening. Meanwhile, the Thane recording station logged 11.6 mm rain during the period. With heavy showers having eluded the city since the beginning of July, records show that the city is currently reeling under a rain deficit with the Santacruz station experiencing a 232 mm deficit while the Colaba station is under a deficit of 186 mm.

Weather experts have alluded that heavy showers are likely to elude Mumbai for the next few days owing to the absence of significant monsoon inducing currents.
