Several cities in Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, and Aurangabad, are among the key places that have been asked to hold mock drills in the state Wednesday as part of a nationwide preparedness exercise to assess the country’s readiness for any hostile attacks.

On Monday, the Centre directed northern and western states and Union Territories to test and strengthen civil defence mechanisms to enhance preparedness for potential wartime scenarios. The direction from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has come after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, and tensions ratcheting up between India and Pakistan intensified.

As part of this national initiative, mock drills will be conducted at 259 locations across India, with Maharashtra being one of the key states involved. These drills are intended to simulate emergency responses in the event of air raids or cross-border attacks.

The key activities during the mock drills include testing of air raid sirens, citizens’ awareness on how to protect themselves during such attacks, simulated “complete blackouts” to practice mass-scale concealment, camouflage techniques for critical infrastructure, and evacuation and relocation rehearsals.

Where in Maharashtra?

Maharashtra will see drills conducted in three classified zones based on strategic importance. Category 1 or Highly Sensitive Areas are India’s financial capital of Mumbai, Uran, where the JNPT port is located, and Tarapur, which is the site of a nuclear facility.

Category 2 consists of major cities like Pune, Nashik, Thane, Roha-Nagothane, Manmad, Sinnar, Thal Vaishet and Pimpiri-Chinchwad.

Category 3 includes Aurangabad, Bhusawal, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg.

What are the categories?

In addition to Maharashtra, states bordering Pakistan and China, including Rajasthan, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal, and others in East India, have also been instructed to carry out similar preparedness exercises. This marks one of the most extensive civil defence mobilisations in recent years.
