Over four years after the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) came up with the idea of a flyover at the congested Kherwadi junction on Western Express Highway,it has decided to finally implement the project.
The MMRDA has invited bids for the construction of the 580-m long and 25-m wide flyover to be built at a cost of around Rs 38 crore. The authority expects to start work by January next year and complete it within the next 18 months.
We had thought of constructing the flyover four or five years ago,but at that time we did not get permission from the traffic police. They said the construction of the sea link should be completed before we start work at Kherwadi junction, said Dilip Kawathkar,MMRDA spokesperson. We have applied for a nod from the traffic police again. We should get their approval soon, he added.
At present, the stretch from Kalanagar junction to Kherwadi junction just before the Vakola junction flyover witnesses snarls during peak hours. The project will reduce travel time on that stretch considerably.
The MMRDA plans to construct the flyover arm-by-arm to avoid causing inconvenience to commuters. This will help provide more space for commuters during construction and the traffic police will be able to maintain smooth vehicular movement, Kawathkar said.
