A Bhandup resident was murdered Sunday allegedly after an argument between two rival mitra mandals (groups in residential areas that organise festivals) turned violent.
Police arrested two minors and four adults Monday evening in connection with the alleged murder.
They said Sanjay Pagare of Tembipada in Bhandup was president of Sadguru Mitra Mandal. He had a long-standing dispute with Sambhaji Kashid, who heads Durga Mata Mitra Mandal, and there had been skirmishes between members.
Sunday night, six to eight people called Pagare near the water pipeline in Bhandup, saying Kashid wanted a compromise. As terms of the compromise were being negotiated,an argument broke out and Pagare was stabbed in the chest. There is a deep stab wound in his chest, said senior inspector Shrirang Nadgauda,Bhandup police station.
Pagare was rushed to a private hospital in Bhandup by friends but was declared dead before admission. Police have registered a murder case against Kashid, who is absconding. There are several other cases against him, too, and he was once externed from the city.
We are looking for another 2-3 people, Nadgauda said.
