Meanwhile, the overall air quality index (AQI) in Mumbai touched 139--that falls in the moderate category--on Thursday morningAmid the temperature in Mumbai city hovering close to 25 degrees Celsius in the past few days, the minimum temperatures have taken a dip with the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Santa Cruz station registering 21.2 degrees on Wednesday.
According to IMD scientists, the temperatures are further slated to dip starting next week, after December 25, owing to the arrival of northerlies and western disturbances in the northern region.
IMD Mumbai director Sunil Kamble told The Indian Express, “For the next 2-3 days, temperatures are expected to remain between 21 and 22 degrees. Following December 25, the city will notice a drop with the temperatures falling below 20 degrees.” Mumbai and its suburbs typically start exhibiting winter-like conditions after December 15, once the maximum temperatures also start falling. On the question, Kamble said the maximum temperatures are also due for a fall after December 25. “However, the scale of fall in the temperature levels will depend on the extent of western disturbances,” he added.
On Tuesday, the maximum temperature in Santa Cruz and Colaba stations oscillated between 31 and 33 degrees. Meanwhile, the overall air quality index (AQI) in Mumbai touched 139–that falls in the moderate category–on Thursday morning with the worst air quality observed in Deonar (226) followed by Bandra Kurla Complex (206).
Referring to the moderate AQI levels which the city has been experiencing since December, Kamble said, “The city is experiencing good wind speed and whenever the wind speed is higher, the pollutants get disbursed faster. This results in the city experiencing good weather.”
For the record, lowest temperature of the season was observed on December 13 when the mercury levels dipped to 19.4 degrees. This was the second time that the megapolis’ temperature went below 20 degrees. However, the city has been observing a gradual increase in the minimum temperatures since last week.
