A Walkeshwar-based diamond merchant has filed a police complaint against his two employees who he claims have defrauded him of Rs 5.62 crore. The complainant had given diamonds worth Rs 5.62 crore to the two accused for work purposes, but they gradually and secretly siphoned off the diamonds, thus duping the complainant.

The accused Prashant Shah and Vishal Shah were employed with JB & brothers Pvt Ltd, which has an office in Bharat Diamond Bourse, Bandra-Kurla Complex.

According to the police, the owner of the company, Sanjay Babulal Shah, 55, would assign work to the two accused persons, wherein the two were sent with diamonds of different kinds and quality to show to clients, and were then to return to office.

During this time, the employees would have to maintain a record about the diamonds they were carrying.

As per the FIR, between April–October this year, the two accused, in a breach of their employer’s trust, secretly siphoned off diamonds worth a total of Rs 5.52 crore.

Recently, the employer discovered the fraud. He made inquiries, collected evidence and then recently approached the police, an officer said.

The BKC police station on Monday registered a case under sections 408 (criminal breach of trust by employee), 420 (cheating) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code, and are on the lookout for the accused.
