Maratha groups, Opposition fume after Shivaji Maharaj’s ‘jiretop’ is placed on PM Modi’s head

Responding to this, Santosh Shinde, a senior member of Maratha outfit Sambhaji Brigade, said, “Jiretop was worn by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and not by his soldiers.

Maratha organisations as well as the Opposition in Maharashtra were up in arms on Tuesday after NCP leader Praful Patel placed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s jiretop on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s head.

Jiretop is a unique cone shaped headgear with a turha that was worn by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. In recent times, the headgear is handed over to someone when it is presented to that person and not placed directly on their heads as a mark of respect to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Instead of handing it over to PM Modi, Patel kept it directly on his head which led to the controversy.

Responding to this, Santosh Shinde, a senior member of Maratha outfit Sambhaji Brigade, said, “Jiretop was worn by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and not by his soldiers. Additionally, one has to follow a dresscode before wearing a jiretop. What message was being sent by making Modiji wear it instead of handing it over in his hand?”

Opposition NCP (SP) issued a statement on social media site X terming it an insult to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. “Jiretop is always offered in the hands and not kept directly on anybody’s head. But Ajit Pawar group’s leader Praful Patel kept it directly on Narendra Modi’s head which is an insult to Chhatrapati shivaji Maharaj. The ruling alliance (Mahayuti) has become so obligated that it is hellbent on destroying the image of Maharashtra. The proud people of Maharashtra will teach a befitting reply to the BJP which has insulted Maharashtra,” it said.

Congress star campaigner Sachin Sawant termed it an assault on Maharashtra’s pride. “Did Praful Patel feel no shame while making PM Narendra Modi wear the jiretop? This is an assault on Maharashtra’s pride,” said Sawant.

Faced with an all-round attack, Maharashtra minister and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena leader Uday Samant said there was no intention to harm anyone’s sentiments. “In future, it will be ensured that no such mistakes happen,” he said.
