(File photo)A 53-year-old manager from a multinational paint company was allegedly defrauded of Rs 51.36 lakh by cyber frauds who lured him with promises of substantial returns on stock market investments. The fraudsters created a convincing virtual platform, including a personal account, to deceive the victim into believing he had accrued Rs 26 crore in profits.
According to police, the fraud took place between May 8 and June 28. The complainant stated that he encountered an Instagram advertisement promising high returns from stock market investments. Interested, he clicked the link and was added to a WhatsApp group named MSFL Stock Chart 33, with approximately 140 members and an admin identified as Juhi V Patel.
After observing the group’s activities, the complainant decided to invest. He filled out a form providing personal details and was instructed to create a login ID on a virtual site called Marwadi Financial Services. His initial investment of Rs 10,000 on May 14 was followed by another Rs 10,000 the next day.
The fraudsters initially showed a return of Rs 22,915, which further convinced the manager of their legitimacy. Encouraged by this, he continued to transfer funds to their account, eventually sending a total of Rs 51.36 lakh by June 28.
The fraudsters manipulated the virtual account to display significant profits of around Rs 26 crore, leading the manager to attempt a withdrawal of Rs 30 lakh. At this point, they demanded an additional payment of Rs 80.55 lakhs in “commission” before processing the withdrawal.
Realizing the scam, he reported the incident to the Maharashtra police helpline and subsequently filed a formal complaint with the central cyber police station.
Police have registered a case of cheating and forgery against unknown individuals. “We have registered a case of cheating and forgery against unknown persons. We are trying to trace them through their call data record and bank account details,” an investigator said.
