A thirty-year-old man wanted in several cases of robbery at suburban railway stations in the city was on Monday arrested for allegedly molesting a 20-year-old girl he met at Mumbai Central station in December. He had posed as a member of a charitable trust and promised to help pay for the treatment of her father suffering from cancer,the police said.
According to Agripada police,accused identified as Umar,is wanted in cases of robbery at Andheri,Bandra,Mumbai Central and Churchgate railway stations.
In December,he saw the girl at Mumbai Central and introduced himself as a member of Lalbaugcha Raja Ganesh Trust. On learning that her father was admitted to Nair Hospital,he offered to help her.
He told her he would arrange money for her fathers treatment. When she accepted,he asked her to meet him outside the hospital a few days later, said Inspector Gnyandeo Dhire of Agripada police station.
Umar allegedly told her she would have to accompany him to Andheri to collect the money. When she agreed,he hailed a taxi,police said.
Umar then proposed to marry her but she flatly refused and began to argue with him. He became angry and tried to molest her. When she raised an alarm,Umar grabbed her cellphone and ran out of the taxi. The victim lodged a complaint with us. he said.
The police obtained Call Detail Records of the stolen phone and tracked down a number from which Umar had received several calls. It turned out to be the phone number of senior inspector of Churchgate GRP. When we spoke to her,she said Umar was wanted in several cases of robbery at her police station. We then tracked down Umar to his home in Vakola in Santacruz East, Dhire said.
Umar was charged under Section 354 (molestation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and remanded him in police custody. OPlice said the cellphone he had stolen has been recovered from his possession.
