A 20-year-old man and a 15-year-old girl allegedly died by suicide by jumping in front of a speeding long-distance train at Vikhroli railway station, police said Monday.

The Kurla GRP officials recovered a purported suicide note from the man’s pocket in which he claimed that he was in a relationship with the girl and they were taking the extreme step as the girl’s parents were against it.

The deceased were identified as Nitesh Dandapalli and Shagun Dubey, residents of Hanuman Nagar in Bhandup.
According to police, the incident happened around 2 pm Sunday when the duo jumped in front of the Garib Rath Express from platform number 4 at Vikhroli railway station.

“We have learned that the the deceased were in a relationship and the girl’s family recently found out about it,” senior police inspector Shambhaji Yadav from Kurla GRP said.

Police added that there are criminal cases registered against Dandapalli and the girl’s family members and hence they were against it. “To ensure that they were not together, the girl’s family started restricting her from leaving the house and were also going to send her away to their native place in Uttar Pradesh,” an officer said.

“When the two found out about it, Dandapalli went to her house on Saturday where he had confrontation with the girl’s family,” the officer added.

Police said Dubey left her house on Sunday morning under some pretext. When she did not return home and her mobile phone was switched off, the family members approached the Bhandup police station and lodged a complaint against Dandapalli. A case of kidnapping was also registered.
