A 23-year-old man arrested in a theft case by the Kurla police on Monday allegedly escaped from the custody of a police constable, while he was being taken to the lockup at Mahim police station.
According to officials, incident happened around 7 pm when the police van escorting the accused Ramkumar Ramtej Maurya got stuck in traffic jam. Constable Hansraj Gaikwad then decided to walk to the police station along with the accused when he escaped.
“Maurya was produced before the court and was taken for medical test at Bhabha hospital in Kurla. He escaped while he was being taken to the lockup at Mahim police station,”said an officer.
“Generally when an accused who is arrested and remanded in police custody is kept in a general lockup during night. So the policemen were taking him to the lock up at Mahim police station,” the officer added.
While the two were walking towards the police station, the accused allegedly pushed away the constable and escaped. The constable tried to chase him but in vain.
“A case under section 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) was lodged at Mahim police station,” said an officer.
Senior police inspector Sudhakar Baburao Shirsath of Mahim police station said, “Our teams are trying to trace the accused.”
