The Malwani police arrested a 42-year-old man for allegedly extorting money from schools after claiming to be a member of an NGO.

The accused has been identified as Azgar Ali Mohammad. The police said Mohammad’s associate,Kiran Sindhi,is still absconding.

Police said the duo targeted schools where construction work was taking place and threatened them with fines for alleged irregularities in construction works.

“The duo threatened schools claiming they knew BMC officials. They often told school officials that there were irregularities and certain norms were being flouted. A few days ago, they had demanded Rs 20,000 from a school in Malwani, which the management gave,” said an officer of the Malwani police station.

The officer said the duo then returned on Friday and demanded another Rs 25,000 from the management.

“Scared abut the closure of their school, the management called a parents meeting to inform them of no classes. However, the parents protested and brought the matter before us,” the officer said.

The officer revealed that Mohammad is also wanted in other cases and has an attempt-to-murder case registered against him.
