According to the police, the complainant, Karan Balaya, 28, works with a businessman who sells grains wholesale. “As the employer frequently goes out of the country for business purposes, he trusts Balaya and usually gives him cash for safekeeping,” said an officer.
Balaya said he had kept in a cupboard a bag containing Rs 20 lakh that his employer had given him around a month ago for safekeeping.
“Only my wife and nephew knew that there was 20 lakh in cash in my home,” he told the police.
On Saturday, Balaya went to work as usual and returned home around 11.30 pm, after which he and his family members went to sleep. Around 3.45 am on Sunday, someone started knocking on their door, according to the complaint.
“As soon as my wife opened the door, the accused pushed her inside and claiming that he was a CID officer, he started searching inside my house,” his police statement read.
The accused told Balaya that his car was parked outside and that he had already started video-recording the “raid”. “He then started taking out my belongings under the pretext of conducting searches and threatened me against ‘acting smart’ and told me to let him ‘perform his duty’,” Balaya told the police.
After speaking to someone briefly, the accused allegedly took the cash bag and stepped outside.
“As Balaya started following the accused to get the bag back, he was warned against informing anyone of the incident,” said an officer, adding that the accused had also abused the complainant.
Balaya said he was too traumatised by the incident to inform anyone about it immediately. However, he told his employer in the morning about what had happened to the cash.
The businessman then realised this was a robbery and instructed Balaya to lodge a police complaint.
The Dadar police have registered a case under relevant sections of personation, cheating and trespassing. “Our teams have already started scrutinising the CCTV footage. We are also checking if any insider had a role in the crime,” said an officer.
