A senior prison officer and a police constable have been arrested by the state Anti-Corruption Bureau for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from the brother of a Taloja jail inmate. The police said the two officials had allegedly demanded money under the pretext of providing better treatment to his brother inside the prison.

According to ACB officials, the senior prison officer has been identified as Nivrutti Kannewad, and the constable, Rahul Garad. The officials said the complainant’s brother had been arrested in a criminal case and lodged in Taloja jail since 2018.

An officer said, “On December 11, the complainant’s brother reached out to him and informed him that the two officials had been demanding money and that he was being harassed in prison because he had not paid any amount.”

Subsequently, the complainant received another call demanding Rs 1,000, and he transferred the amount through Google Pay. He also shared a screenshot of the payment. The complainant’s brother was also presented in the sessions court on December 13.

“The officials again contacted him and made another demand for Rs 10,000. As he did not want to pay any further, the complainant approached the ACB’s head office in Worli and submitted an application,” an officer said.

During the course of the initial inquiry, it came to light that Garad was willing to accept the money on Saturday. Following this, ACB officials laid a trap and arrested him red-handed while accepting the Rs 10,000 bribe.

“Once the money was received, Garad informed Kannewad over the phone. Kannewad was then caught accepting Rs 10,000 from Garad,” an officer added. The two officials were produced before court and remanded in police custody.
