Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has sought a proposal to increase the number of approved Shiv Bhojan Thalis to 10 lakh daily from the existing two lakh thalis, according to a senior official from the state Food and Civil Supplies department.

One of the most popular initiatives of the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra, the Shiv Bhojan Thali is a form of subsidised meal scheme provided through canteens run by contractors.

The scheme offered a full meal thali with two chapatis, vegetables, rice and dal for Rs 10. The menu was not changed since it was launched on January 26, 2020. The local canteen contractor can decide which vegetable to be served in the thali.

“We have been getting requests from several quarters seeking an increase in the total number of approved thalis. There are many who want to open canteens in their areas. But we cannot go beyond two lakh and we have already given all the contracts for existing thalis,” said the official.

The official added that 80 per cent of the applications received by the department are about seeking knath Shindean increase in the strength of thalis.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has asked the department to prepare a proposal, which will be placed before the state cabinet for approval after getting clearance from the finance department.

At present, an average 1.75 to 1.76 lakh meals are served daily under this scheme against the approved number of two lakh. In urban areas, the cost of the thali came to Rs 50, and in rural areas, the amount was Rs 35. It was sold by canteens for Rs 10, with the government compensating the rest of the amount.

The scheme’s overall budget for the past financial year (2022-23) was Rs 176 crore. For the ongoing fiscal, the budgetary provision is Rs 220 crore. The increase in the budget was in anticipation of various factors, including the expansion of the scheme as well as possible inflation.
