(Express file photo) Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Monday said the district collectors have been directed to assess the situation and furnish preliminary reports on unseasonal rain and hailstorms and their effect on farming in Maharashtra.
Fadnavis told the media in Nagpur, “In the last two days, there have been unseasonal rain and hailstorms. The rabi crops are in various stages of growth. We have urged the district authorities to make a ground assessment and submit a preliminary report.”
Fadnavis added, “The state government is always concerned about the welfare of farmers. It will provide all necessary help once the report comes.”
Though the monsoon ended in October, unseasonal rain, lightning and hailstorms lashed parts of northern and western Maharashtra, and the Konkan, Vidabha, and Marathwada regions.
The water levels of the Godavari river rose following the intense rains. The overnight rain and hailstorms are likely to affect the rabi crops ready for harvest adversely.
In northern Maharashtra, grape and onion cultivation has been hit, and the unseasonal rain is likely to affect mango farming in the Konkan region.
In the Vidarbha and Marathwada regions, the untimely rain will affect cotton and cereals.
