Maharashtra Congress on Monday announced to hold a march termed “Sadbhavana (compassion) Yatra” from Massajog village in Beed district where a sarpanch was killed last year which led to arrest of Walmik karad, a close aide of NCP minister Dhananjay Munde.
The party will hold the the 51-km march, which starts from Massajog and concludes at Beed city, on March 8, marking the international Women’s day.
Maharashtra Congress chief Harshvardhan Sapkal said that the march is not political in nature.
“The social environment of Maharashtra has become extremely polluted. It is important that the secular and progressive nature of the state is reinstated once again,” Sapkal said.
“Beed is also one of the districts with worst gender ration and that is why we have chosen March 8 to kickstart the
yatra,” he added.
The group of Congress leaders as well as social workers, students, women, common citizens and authors will first pay respect to the religious places of Bhagwangad and Narayangad before beginning the yatra.
Sapkal said that similar marches will be held in near future in Parbhani, where a Dalit youth was allegedly killed in police custody after the violence erupted due to desacration of Dr B R Ambedkar’s statue.
