The traditional dahi handi celebrations in Mumbai and Thane were used by the ruling parties to maximise its outreach and convey a strong political message ahead of the crucial Assembly elections in November 2024.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde participating in the festivities in home turf Thane district announced, “We will break the Vidhan Sabha Dahi handi.” Implying the ruling Mahayuti, an alliance of three political parties (Shiv Sena, BJP and NCP) will win the assembly polls.

Dahi handi is celebrated every year on Janmashtami (birth of Lord Krishna). People form pyramids and break a clay pot (handi) filled with curd and butter. Huge cash prizes are announced and awarded to the group that succeeds to break the dahi handi.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis visited dahi handi events from Colaba to Dahisar. He also went to Thane to join the celebration organised by the Shiv Sena at Tembhi Naka.

Fadnavis said, “The govindas (youths participating in pyramid formation) enacted a play where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj used tiger claws to kill Mughal general Afzal Khan… If anybody dares to attack swaraj, they would meet the same fate.”
