(Express photo/File)After renaming Aurangabad and Osmanabad as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and Dharashiv respectively, the Maharashtra cabinet on Wednesday decided to rename Ahmednagar as Ahilyanagar after Ahilyabai Holkar and Velha tehsil in Pune district as Rajgad. Velha was the first capital of the Maratha Empire under the Maratha warrior king Shivaji.
Earlier, on the occasion of the 298th birth anniversary of Ahilyabai Holkar, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that the government would rename Ahmednagar as Ahilyanagar after Holkar, who was a Holkar Queen of the Malwa kingdom.
“The government has decided to name Ahmednagar district after Punyashlok Ahilya Devi Holkar. Our government is fortunate to have taken this decision. Ahilya Devi’s work was as big as the Himalayas. Giving her name will increase the honour of this district,” Shinde had said.
According to the government, many people’s representatives, citizens and organisations have been demanding to change the name of Ahmednagar city and the state government had also received the resolution of the Ahmednagar Municipal Corporation.
“Accordingly, it has been proposed to rename it as per the revised guidelines of the Ministry of Home Affairs and after getting the approval of the Centre. The process of renaming Ahmednagar district, taluka and Municipal Corporation will be done by the Revenue and Urban Development Department,” the official said.
In August 2023, the Maharashtra Assembly unanimously passed two resolutions to send proposals to rename Aurangabad as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and Osmanabad as Dharashiv.
Meanwhile, the state government also took a decision to change the colonial names of eight railway stations in Mumbai.
“The proposal will be sent to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and Railways with the approval of the Legislature,” the official said.
Land for guest house in Kashmir
The state cabinet on Wednesday also gave its nod for acquisition of land in Ichchagam taluka of Budgam district in Jammu and Kashmir to construct Maharashtra State Guest House in Jammu and Kashmir.
An approval has been given to acquire 2.5 acres of plot for Rs 8.16 crore which would be near Srinagar Airport.
The officials claimed that the guest house will provide a convenient, comfortable and affordable accommodation for the tourists from Maharashtra visiting Jammu and Kashmir.
