Even as fire brigade personnel cleared debris of the collapsed Ray Chambers, its evacuated residents searched frantically for their belongings amongst the mounds of concrete, cement and dust.

Trucks loaded with debris were offloaded at the nearby Lal Maidan as the residents dug in to the pile looking for their important possessions. “My board exams start in a month’s time and all my books and notes are lost,” said teary-eyed Ramona Fernandes,a 12th standard student of Sophia College.

Twenty-year-old Russell Perris’s four pet dogs and seven puppies were left in the back portion of their 5th floor house. “Before we could get our dogs down the front portion collapsed. My mother fainted when she saw the building falling. But I along with the fireman managed to rescue my dogs,” said Russell. Synthia Augustine,a fourth-floor resident, rejoiced momentarily as she found her passport in the debris. “This is the only identity proof that I have now. The rest is all lost,” Synthia said. Hyder Mister,a third floor resident, managed to retrieve his wedding album. “We lost our ration cards and passports but I am happy that I at least got my wedding album back,” Mister said.
