(Express photo by Amit Chakravarty)After the city received 657 millimetres of rainfall in September, resulting in an excess of nearly 80 per cent from its monthly average quota of 360 mm, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated light to moderate showers in the city over the next 3-4 days, even as the monsoon is set to withdraw in October.
Between Sunday and Monday morning, just 3.7 mm rain was recorded in the suburbs , while Mumbai logged an overall surplus of 83 per cent in September. The Santacruz observatory records an average of 360 mm rain in September, which is typically the least wet monsoon month for the city, while it received over 657 mm rain in the month, this year.
It was due to the torrential downpour last week when the city logged close to 400 mm rain within five days that its monthly rain quota catapulted to an excess. The city had also logged nearly 50 per cent surplus rainfall in July, while there was rain deficit in June and August.
The official date of monsoon withdrawal from Mumbai is October 8. At present, the line of south-west monsoon withdrawal is traversing through Rajasthan and Gujarat. It is expected to enter Maharashtra by October 5.
The IMD has indicated light showers in the upcoming days. Sunil Kamble, director of IMD Mumbai told The Indian Express, “In the next 3-4 days, Mumbai will receive light to moderate rain. After this, when the rain activity ceases, we will observe the situation before announcing the official date of withdrawal.”
Last year, Mumbai witnessed an early withdrawal on October 7.
