(PTI Photo) Following incessant showers in the past fortnight, the city is slated to experience moderate rainfall in the upcoming week, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a green alert, implying moderate rains for Mumbai and its neighbouring districts of Thane, Palghar and Raigad which is in place from Sunday (July 9) to Friday (July 14).
According to the bulletin issued by the weather bureau, Mumbaikars can expect the moderate downpour to be coupled with thunderstorms on Tuesday.
On Monday, the city experienced intermittent spells of light showers. Between Sunday and Monday until 8 am, the IMD’s weather station at Santacruz recorded 13 mm of rain whereas the Colaba observatory registered 2 mm of downpour. Sushma Nair, scientist at IMD Mumbai told The Indian Express, “The city is going to receive light to moderate showers in the ongoing week.”
Even as the city has been experiencing diminished downpour, the water stock level in the seven lakes which supply water to Mumbai, has replenished substantially. Data furnished by the civic body showed that by Monday morning, the lake levels touched 25 % of the total water level.
While the official date of monsoon’s arrival in Mumbai is June 10, this year, its onset happened on June 25. Despite the delayed onset of monsoon, Mumbai surpassed over 1000 mm of rainfall within two weeks. The IMD’s Santacruz observatory has recorded 1043 mm of showers till date while the coastal Colaba station has received 658 mm.
In its weather forecast for the next five days, the IMD announced a yellow alert in several districts of Maharashtra. The maximum rainfall is expected in Konkan’s Sindhudurg district wherein the IMD has sounded a yellow alert, stating the possibility of a heavy rainfall in isolated pockets, which is in place from today until Friday (July 14). For the state, meteorologists have forecasted the next active spell of monsoon between Thursday (July 13) and Sunday (July 16).
