Law panel rejects civic dept proposal on fire tax

The fire department’s proposal to collect a fire protection fee from developers of new projects was referred back by the civic body’s law committee on Monday.

The fire department’s proposal to collect a fire protection fee from developers of new projects was referred back by the civic body’s law committee on Monday. Amid concerns that such a fee might affect redevelopment and new proposals, the committee members have asked for a detailed presentation on the same. The BMC’s proposal to increase the fire protection fee by twice the ‘minimum amount’,which can be charged by the civic administration had raised eyebrows in the meeting. According to a senior official the proposed fee is negligible compared to other civic bodies, which charge as high as 10 times the minimum charges. Also, the proposal includes a one per cent annual charge, which was not accepted by many members, fire officials said. The proposal, aimed at recovering ‘firemen’s annual protection fee’ from builders was disapproved on grounds that it would add on to the cost of Slum rehabilitation dwellers and buyers of redevelopment houses.
