With 7,000 constables set to be inducted this month, Mumbai police strength to jump 22%
The city constabulary, which forms nearly 90 per cent of the force, currently has 32,000 personnel — nearly 12,000 short of its approved strength of over 44,000 personnel.

WITH 7,000 fresh recruits in concluding stages of their training, Mumbai Police will witness the largest augmentation of its personnel at one go in recent times, in the month of September. With a major chunk of these 7,000 recruits set to join between Sunday and Monday, this will raise the Mumbai Police strength by nearly 22 per cent or over one-fifth of its current strength.
The city constabulary, which forms nearly 90 per cent of the force, currently has 32,000 personnel — nearly 12,000 short of its approved strength of over 44,000 personnel.
With the 7,000 constables, who were recruited last year and completed their police training in August, slated to join soon, the enhancement in the strength at the constabulary level will especially come in handy ahead of the festive season, where the force is reliant on more boots on the ground to maintain law and order during festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi.
Joint Commissioner of Police (administration) S Jaykumar said, “Of the over 7,000 personnel who went in for training, 4,500 of them have completed their training at the Police Training Schools (PTCs). While over 900 police drivers joined the force recently, 4,500 more, who have completed training, will join in a day or two. The rest too will join in the coming month.”
Another officer said, “The rest of the personnel too have almost completed the training so in September we should have the rest of them joining the force as well.”
Another officer said that there are 10 PTCs in the state that have the capacity to train over 7,000 personnel. Their training has been completed and their Passing Out Parades (POPs) were carried out in the past week following which they are now ready to join Mumbai Police. “It will be a big boost for the force in terms of manpower,” an IPS officer said.
In recent history, it is for the first time such a large number of police personnel will be joining the force in one go. The reason behind such a large hiring comes in the backdrop of a massive shortfall of personnel in Mumbai Police forcing the state government to pay nearly Rs 100 crore annually to employ 3,000 personnel from the Maharashtra State Security Corporation (MSSC) on contract basis for Mumbai Police.
