The state government said Friday unless hurdles in land acquisition were removed, the Rs 21,000-crore Oval Maidan-Virar elevated corridor project would not move ahead. The government is worried about rehabilitation of project-affected people which requires acquisition of 2.8 hectares in the city and its suburbs. Some of the stretches criss-cross through salt pans which are locked and pending with the Centre.

At a high-level meeting of railways, state government officials and other stake-holders,FSI was debated. The government said the state support agreement should be signed only after land acquisition was completed.

M Saran, railway board executive director,V Sangal,Western Railway chief administrative officer,Sandeep Silas,Western Railway divisional manager,UPS Madan,MMRDA metropolitan commissioner and BMC commissioner Sitaram Kunte discussed problems confronting the project.

A railway official said,“It was a routine meeting before a joint land acquisition survey by the railways and the state government.”

Former railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal had discussed the project with CM Prithviraj Chavan on April 16. The Centre wants the state to play a bigger role in execution of the project, which was in-principle approved by the state cabinet on April 9.

The public-private partnership project involves building a 63.27-km two-track corridor — 42.72 km elevated track,8.04 km underground and 12.52 km at grade level — along the Churchgate-Virar section.
