The prime accused in the quadruple murder of youths near Kurar village in Malad has been declared an approver in the case by a sessions court.

The move came after 23-year-old Vaibhav Chavan alias Bodya moved an application stating he wanted to aid the prosecution and wanted to act as prosecution’s witness.

Chavan is one of the close friends of prime accused Uday Pathak, who along with the other gang members allegedly killed four men in a gruesome manner on June 5 this year. Chavan,a college graduate, worked as a small-time AC mechanic.

Chavan had approached the sessions court at the beginning of this week. However, sessions judge S Kadu had given him four days to rethink his decision.

As per the procedure,Chavan will now be deposing before the magistrate court. “Chavan will be kept in a cell away from the other accused,to ensure that no one tries to harm him,’’ said a source.

Four men Ganesh Karanje (24),Dinesh Ahire (25),Chetan Dhule (24) and Bharat Kundle (27) went missing in June following which their family and friends contacted Kurar police.

However, the bodies of the four men with throats slit were found on a hillock in Kurar village. Police have arrested 16 accused in the case.
