The 52-year-old-woman who was allegedly raped by Abhishek Kasliwal, son of Shriram Mills owner Ambuj Kasliwal, was traced after over two and a half years. The victim had mysteriously gone missing in October 2006 making it difficult for the prosecution to proceed with the case.
Police sources confirmed that she was brought to the police station three days back. Public prosecutor Usha Kiran Makasare confirmed that the victim will be produced before the sessions court on June 17. Her statement may be recorded on the next date, said Makasare.
The case received a major jolt after the victim went missing and there was no independent witness to support the prosecutions case. A controversy took shape after special public prosecutor Avadhut Chimalkar withdrew from the case stating that without the victim the case held no water. Makasare took over the case after Chimalkars exit.
Police had made a lot of efforts to find the victim. This is a major breakthrough in our case. There are no independent witnesses and the victims appearance before the court will only substantiate our case, said Makasare.
The police received flak from the court after the victim went missing. Both the High Court and the sessions court had pulled the police for not providing enough security to the victim and had ordered that she be traced.
According to the police on March 11,2006,Kasliwal had offered the victim a lift. He allegedly offered her a drink during the drive which allegedly contained sedatives and made her unconscious. Kasliwal then drove the car to the Shriram Mills compound area where he allegedly raped her.
The victim had lodged a complaint with the police and Kasliwal was arrested. After spending over a month in prison,Kasliwal was granted bail on April 18,2006 on the ground that he would not enter the city limits until the trial is over.
