Working overtime to ensure watertight arrangements in the run-up to the hanging of the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict Yakub Memon, the Nagpur jail authorities Monday stepped up security at all gates and further restricted entry into the jail premises.
“In the event of what happened in Punjab today, and given the sensitive nature of Memon’s case, we are taking utmost precaution to ensure that nothing untoward happens,” a senior city police official said.
With an aim to keep the media at a distance from the jail’s main entrance, authorities have raised barricades around the main gate.

While Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) Swati Sathe suddenly gave up her additional charge of Nagpur jail to return to Pune last week, Additional DG (Prisons) Meera Borwankar was camping in the city last week, supervising arrangements being made by Jail Superintendent Yogesh Desai. She left the city on Sunday and is expected to be back soon.
Meanwhile, preparations inside the jail for Memon’s hanging were on at full swing.
The Maharashtra government had recently sanctioned Rs 22 lakh for fool-proof security arrangements and issued a government resolution (GR) to the effect. The money is being used to erect a ceiling over the gallows.
“The ceiling is being created possibly because of factors like rain, which could make the hanging rope slippery, and also due to the possibilities of the event being captured on camera by using latest technology such as drones or satellite imagery,” said a senior official.
