A Sessions Court has directed the DIG (Prisons) to take action against a Byculla Prison officer who allegedly released four undertrials, accused of attempting dacoity, without a proper bail order.

Seeking a report on action taken against the official by May 18,the court asked the police to launch a manhunt for the accused. The Wadala railway police had arrested Sujauddin Sardar,Rafiqual Lashkar,Shambhu Roy and Noormohammed Lashkar on December 11 last year.

On March 23,they were granted bail by the Sessions Court on grounds that their custody was no more required. Lawyer Mujahid Mulla said they were granted bail on a solvent surety of Rs 20,000 each. The Sessions Court registrar department had forwarded a ‘bail intimation notice’ to the prison officials. “Since they were poor,we could not provide the surety amount,” Mulla said. However,on March 26,they were released from prison. One of the co-accused had informed the court about their release from jail.
