Indian football’s striking sensations, predatory pair and currentposter boys for the sport Jeje Lalpekhlua and Sunil Chhetri were at their best while basking in the home conditions of the familiar turf at the Salt Lake under the rapturous cheer of the Kolkata faithful. The resultant was a total of three goals between them, orchestrating a 3-2 defeat of a higher-ranked Malaysian team in a recent friendly.
This is the exact environment, according to Indian football legend Bhaichung Bhutia,in which the Indians should be tested by Glasgow Rangers FC. Like in the other countries, the foreign club should send their scout here to test the players abilities. The Indians should be tested in their home environment and not in sub zero conditions,so that they can perform to the best of their abilities, he said.
While the curtains close on an epic career of Indian football’s greatest son,two other equally talented players, who have been waiting in the wings for their shot at the big-time have finally received the opportunity to pick up the mantle. And no better chance than the trials for the Scottish club to prove their mettle.
It is great that they have received this opportunity. It just shows where Indian football is headed. They must try their best to secure a place in the squad so that they can pave the way for other youngsters in the sport, said Bhutia.
27-year-old Chhetri will pursue the attempt of playing for a foreign club for the fourth time, having become somewhat of a veteran at selection trials with stints at England-based Queens Park Rangers Football Club,Coventry City and USA-based Kansan City Wizards. Jeje,on the other hand, who is just 20-years-old,is one of the more recent discoveries, who has already notched up six goals in nine appearances for the senior squad has cemented his place in the side thanks to his impressive performances.
The trip to Glasgow has, however, been marred in controversy with the players’ I league clubs restraining from giving them clearance for the trials. ‘Contractual obligations’ was the reason cited by the Mohun Bagan staff. However, clearance was received from Kenny Moyes the agent involved in the current transaction. Both clubs are aware of what is happening and know the players will be having a trial at Rangers. All the paper work has been completed and we expect they’ll be coming over between the 24th and 26th of November, Moyes, who is also the agent of Liverpool footballer Charlie Adam, told The Daily Record a Scottish newspaper.
January of next year, will be an important month in the scheme of things for Indian football. India will bid adieu to one of their most prominent footballers, when Bhaichung plays his farewell match against Bayern Munich. At the same time, the transfer window will determine whether both or either one of the Indians will be playing Scottish football in the next season, thus opening a new chapter in history.
