The police raided an establishment in Oshiwara for allegedly selling hookahs and detained its manager and nine patrons on Wednesday night. “We had received information that the joint was selling hookah. Our team raided the place and booked the manager,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 9) Pratap Dighavkar. Dighavkar said he would take up the issue with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. “We are planning to speak to the municipal commissioner about the issue. We will take strict action against such establishments,” said Dighavkar.

Police deny use of force at bank protest

Account holders of the Veershaiva Co-operative Bank’s branch in Andheri protested on Thursday following reports of the bank’s closure. The police were called in to control the crowd. While those who had gathered claimed they were lathicharged,the police have denied the reports. “There was a big queue in front of the bank and we were waiting to withdraw money. When the crowd increased,the bank called the police. They came and lathicharged us,” said Akshaylal Yadav. “We had gone there to control the crowd but did not use force,” said an official from the Andheri police station.

ID cards for jewellers this October

The All India Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation on Thursday unveiled its plan to implement a biometric identity card system for jewellers across India. The identity cards,which will contain details about the jeweller,will also be given to the employees. Dinesh Jain,president of the Jewellers ID Legal and Redressal Forum,said,“While transporting jewellery,we face problems with authorities who sometimes suspect us. These identity cards will solve the problem as it will have all the relevant information about the jewellers.” While the first batch of cards is expected to be doled out in October,it will only be given to founding and lifetime members. “The project will cost us approximately Rs 1.5 crore,but this is a security issue and money is not important,” Jain said.
