Mental health tests for civic school kids
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will soon conduct a mental health check-up of all 4.5 lakh students in civic schools to identify any signs of depression or trouble dealing with pressure,which could lead to suicidal tendencies. Education officer Appasaheb Jadhav said students of psychology from SNDT and Mumbai University will be approached for the tests. Part of its Life Is Beautiful project to stop the spate of suicides,the civic administration has already begun counselling its teachers on how to talk to students,avoid name calling,favouritism and encourage students’ participation.
Five acquitted of murder bid charges
Five persons accused of firing on television producer Anand Mahendroo of Dekh Bhai Dekh fame were acquitted by the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) judge on Thursday after the investigation officer changed his testimony several times. The case dates back to January 2006 when Mahendroo was shot by a person outside Fun Republic multiplex in Andheri (West). The police had arrested prime accused Ilam Singh immediately after the incident. Singh,who worked with Mahendroo had been sent behind bars after being caught stealing from Mahendroos residence. Singh,having completed his sentences,was alleged to have sought vengeance. However,when the case reached the sessions court,prosecution failed to establish the motive.
Man held for rape of 12-year-old
The Gamdevi police on Thursday arrested a 23-year-old unemployed youth for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl in his neighbourhood. While the incident reportedly transpired a month-and-a-half back,the girl revealed it to her mother today. The police arrested Kailash Mayavanshi,who stayed in the victim’s neighbourhood. “A month-and-a-half back,Mayavanshi had lured the victim,sedated her and raped her. A medical check-up of the girl has also verified the rape,” said Sanjay Diwadkar,senior police inspector,Gamdevi police station.
Shiney to get DNA,medical test reports
The Bombay High Court on Wednesday directed the prosecution to hand over the DNA and other medical test reports sought by actor Shiney Ahuja within 15 days.
The actor,accused for allegedly raping his maid,had moved an application before the High Court seeking the copies of the records. HC in October had granted extension to the actor for furnishing a surety amounting to Rs 50,000.
Scheme to help elderly on Konkan Rly
Elderly people travelling alone on the Konkan Railway (KR) route can now have an attendant to carry their luggage under the Shravan Seva scheme. This facility can be availed by sending an SMS four hours in advance of their journey,indicating their PNR,Coach and Seat Number on 09664044456. The service is available at Chiplun,Ratnagiri,Thivim,Karmali and Madgaon stations to start with. Commuters wont be charged for this, said KR chief spokesperson Siddheshwar Telugu.
