Following a delayed onset of monsoon this year, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Friday announced the withdrawal of the South West monsoon in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra, four days before the official date of withdrawal. According to senior scientists of the IMD Mumbai, the official date of withdrawal is October 10.

“Today, the Southwest Monsoon has withdrawn from the remaining parts of Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Uttar Pradesh, West Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, some parts of East Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Marathwada, Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan, entire North Arabian Sea and some parts of Central Arabian Sea,” said the IMD in a statement issued Friday.

Furthermore, Saturday, taking to X (formerly Twitter), the weather department added that conditions for further withdrawal of southwest monsoon from several states, including parts of Maharashtra, looked favourable over the course of the next two to three days.

According to the IMD, this year, the southwest monsoon had begun withdrawing from Rajasthan on September 25.

For the record, in 2022, despite the timely arrival of monsoon, withdrawal in Mumbai was delayed by almost two weeks, with the IMD announcing monsoon withdrawal on October 23.

Meanwhile, this year, the onset was delayed by two weeks with monsoon sweeping the bay on June 25. While the official date of monsoon in Mumbai is June 11, its arrival had been marred owing to several factors, including Cyclone Biparjoy developing in the Arabian Sea.

Amid the announcement of the monsoon withdrawal, Mumbai and its neighbouring districts have been experiencing a dry spell throughout the week. Between Friday and Saturday morning, the IMD’s Santacruz and the Colaba coastal centres recorded 0 mm rain.

According to meteorologists and weather experts, the city is slated to experience increased temperatures owing to the monsoon withdrawal.

On Saturday, the water stock in the seven lakes which supply water to the city touched 99.01 per cent. With the water stock nearing its full capacity, Mumbai will not experience a water cut in the city until the onset of next monsoon, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed.
