IM suspects’ shift from Gujarat ‘will take time’

The trial against 21 alleged Indian Mujahideen operatives arrested by the Mumbai police could be delayed as the Gujarat police are yet to get a order passed by the state government on their transfer to Mumbai.

The trial against 21 alleged Indian Mujahideen operatives arrested by the Mumbai police could be delayed as the Gujarat police are yet to get a order passed by the state government on their transfer to Mumbai. The IM suspects are facing trial in Gujarat too and the government there has prohibited their transfer till the trial is over.

Getting the ban set aside would take time though the process has been initiated, the prosecution in Mumbai informed the special MCOCA court on Wednesday.

“The Gujarat police, which had taken the custody of over 10 accused for their alleged role in the 2008 multiple blasts, have initiated the process and urged their superior officers to start proceedings to clear the ban,” special public prosecutor Raja Thackeray told the court. Later,he told Newsline the process could take months.

Earlier, too, the Gujarat police had assured the special court they would produce the alleged operatives on July 12. The court had issued a showcause notice to the policemen, who had taken their custody from the court last. Since then, the IM suspects have been in Sabarmati prison.
