IITB extends hunt for ideas

The Indian Institute of Technology - Bombay (IITB) has opened its “Ten great ideas to change the world in the next 50 years” initiative to people across the world.

Institute also sets new deadline for submitting entries

The Indian Institute of Technology – Bombay (IITB) has opened its “Ten great ideas to change the world in the next 50 years” initiative to people across the world. The competition was restricted to IITB’s alumni, students, faculty and staff — to send in their ideas in science and technology — when it was launched last year.

Keeping in mind the recent Mumbai terror attacks and the cyber security concern, the IITB has also decided to give away a special prize for the best security solution idea — the best idea “to make the world a safer place to live in”. The deadline has also been extended to May 30.

Adi Godrej, member of IITB advisory council and chairman of Godrej group, said,“I believe this is a timely programme to encourage thinking and innovation. Despite the global meltdown,India will probably be the fastest or the second fastest growing economy in the world and the IITs have an important role to play in making India resilient and successful. Godrej will help leverage ideas that come out of this contest.”

The successful entries will be given prizes worth Rs 50 lakh. Around 30 entries will be shortlisted by the IITB faculty and the judges for the final competition include Dr Abdul Kalam,Professor Craig Winter,Infosys Technologies chairman and chief mentor Narayana Murthy,Microsoft former chief technology officer Nathan Myhrvold,Professor Mark Welland of Cambridge University,Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia and Piramal Enterprises chairman Ajay Piramal.

IITB director Prof Devang Khakar said,“the criteria for selection of ideas will include feasibility, novelty, their impact on environment, industries and society etc.”

While the intellectual property rights will remain with the person forwarding the idea,Godrej or IITB will incubate some ideas and develop them into reality, said Professor UB Desai of IITB electrical engineering department.

Meanwhile, the IITB has seen around 70 per cent placement this year. “Some students are not accepting job offers because of lower salary packages as compared to what was offered last year,” Prof Khakar said. Godrej noted that the universities world over are seeing an increase in number of post-graduate registrations as more students are opting to study further now.
