THE Naupada police station has registered an accidental death case in Krishna Niwas building collapse that killed 12 persons and injured seven. The police are planning to seek help from IIT-Bombay experts to find the exact reasons for the collapse.

They have written to structural engineers at IIT, Bombay at Powai. On August 3, 2015, the building collapsed with layers of debris piled on one another like pancakes. There are reports that renovation of the building had damaged a pillar. Demolition of the adjacent building, Kamalaji Niwas was also on when the building collapsed.

“We are investigating all angles. There are reports that renovation work had started by one Gangaram Stampwala. The residents claimed that during renovation a portion of plaster fell off and possibly the pillar was damaged. However, there is no evidence to support it,” said Sachin Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 1.

The statements of injured residents have been taken by Naupada police.

“Thane Municipal Corporation claims that although Krishna Niwas was built in 1965, it was not in a bad condition. To get the authentication on many issues related to the reason of collapse, we are planning to seek help from IIT experts,” added Patil.

“One of the survivors, Amrut Lal Patel, says there was internal damage to Krishna Niwas due to renovation. We have kept the debris for tests. We are yet to get confirmation from IIT-Bombay to help us,” added Patil.
