IIT Bombay student dies after falling off 10th floor of hostel building
The Mumbai police said they have recorded the statements of the IIT students who were with Delhi native Rohit Sinha, 23, at the hostel on Friday night.

A 22-year-old student of IIT Bombay died allegedly after falling off the 10th floor of a hostel building on the campus in Powai on Friday night. The police suspect it may be a case of suicide.
The deceased, identified as Delhi native Rohit Sinha, had just finished his BTech in Meta Science and was awaiting job placement, officers said, adding that no suicide note was found.
In a statement, the institute has condoled the untimely death of its student.
According to the police, Sinha and a few other students met on Friday night and ordered food, after which they went to the terrace. Later, when other students left, Sinha stayed back at the terrace.
Investigators said that after the fall, hostel residents rushed the student to a local hospital where he was declared dead. “Family members of the deceased have been alerted, and the body will soon be handed over to them,” an officer added.
Issuing a statement, the IIT Bombay administration said, “It is with deep sorrow that we inform you of the untimely passing of our final-year student, Mr Rohit Sinha 22, from the BTech program in the MEMS Department, in a tragic incident that occurred late last night. The Powai Police are currently investigating the matter.”
“His sudden and untimely death has deeply shocked us, and we share in the grief. It is truly unfortunate that such a promising career has come to a premature end. His passing has saddened the entire IIT Bombay community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones, and we pray they find the strength to bear this immense loss,” the statement added.
Amid speculation that Sinha was distressed over not securing a placement, sources from the institute emphasised that the placement process does not begin before December.
The police said they have recorded the statements of the fellow IIT students who were with Sinha on Friday night, but nothing suspicious has come to their notice.
The local Powai police have filed an Accidental Death Report as per procedure, and are carrying out further probe.
The police will also record the statements of Sinha’s family members to determine if anything was bothering the student which could have made him take the extreme step.
