Alleged manager of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim,Abdul Qayoom, told the special TADA court on Thursday that he was a victim of “wrong identity.” Qayoom, arrested for his involvement in the 1993 serial bomb blasts, said he was picked up instead of the real accused Abdul Qayoom Sajni.

Qayoom who was on run since the attack was arrested by the Crime Branch in 2007. According to the prosecution,Qayoom was an important part of the conspiracy hatched prior to the blasts.

Pleading he was wrongly implicated in the case,Qayoom told special Judge D U Mulla on Thursday that it was one Abdul Qayoom Sajni who worked with Dawood and was involved in the conspiracy.

“I have never met Dawood. I am wrongly implicated by the police,” Qayoom said in his statement recorded under Section 313 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Of the total accused involved in the 1993 serial blast, three of them— Qayoom, gangster Abu Salem and Riyaz Siddiqui — are facing trial besides the absconding accused.

As all three accused were arrested after the trial concluded,a separate trial was carried against the three. Court will record Salem’s statement on March 23.
