In a move that could translate into a sizeable revenue for medical and educational institutions, the state government has decided to allow them to rent out 30 per cent of their premises for commercial purposes.
In a recent notification, the state government stated that all schools, colleges, hospitals and other educational and healthcare institutions that have received ISO certification can rent out a portion of their premises for commercial activities. The occupants of such space could include banks, insurance companies and financial services.
The notification states,With a view to achieving professional standards of quality and performance of educational and medical institutions, financial support is required which can be generated through commercial exploitation of the plot. It also notes that a request to this effect has been put forth by several large hospitals saying there is lower demand for exclusive medical office space.
The state government, however, mandates that a minimum 10 per cent of the said space should be kept aside for ancillary activities related to the principal use of the institutional buildings. In case of hospitals, this could be chemist shop, bookstall, florist, fruit stall, diagnostic centre, medical research centre office, medicare insurance, office and bank with ATM centre. For ISO certified schools and colleges, the ancillary activities for which 10% of the space has to be reserved include sports shop, stationary shop,uniform/tailor shop and bank or ATM centre.
