TO suit the current mood of the audience, which has taken to regional entertainment through cinema,Reliance BIG TV is offering a variety of popular Marathi plays, like Jaywant Dalvi’s Purush,Pradeep Dalvi’s controversial Mi Nathuram Godse Boltoy, and Vasant Kanetkar’s Raigadala Jevha Jaag Yete. These plays are a part of the DTH service’s pay-per-view package.

Umesh Rao,the senior VP of Reliance Big TV,says that the company is testing waters with Marathi plays before they introduce plays in other languages. “Through surveys we found that many people are looking at quality yet novel content. Since Marathi theatre has a great heritage,we decided to tap into it,” he adds.

The plays are mostly works of yesteryears and the recordings have been acquired for a period of 30 to 40 days on up to 30 per cent revenue sharing basis with the play’s production company. The DTH service currently has 25 plays in its library of which eight will be on offer at a time. The viewers, says Rao,can choose the play they wish to watch at Rs 25. The offer, which has been made available from July 1,has been receiving good response. “Unique content has its takers. When we offered Michael Jackson and Beyonce concerts earlier this year,we received good response. The results for Marathi plays have been encouraging too. We hope to repeat this with Gujarati plays, which we will introduce in our library next.”
