A traffic constable was injured after a taxi hit him on Friday. The constable was admitted to Wockhardt Hospital with injuries on left part of his body. He is out of danger now. According to the police, when the constable asked a taxi driver to show his licence, instead of handing it over to him the driver started his taxi, hit the constable and sped away.

According to the Kurla police, the constable Dashrath Karbari Awhad (38),an Airoli resident, who is attached to the Ghatkopar Branch of the traffic police, was monitoring traffic at the CST Road in Kurla on Friday morning. “At 10.10 am,when Awhad saw a taxi causing a minor jam,he asked the driver to park his taxi at the side of the road. He then asked the driver to hand over his licence. But when the latter refused to do,Awhad had alerted his office. Meanwhile, fearing he may be penalised, the taxi driver started his taxi and without a warning sped off, knocking Awhad down,” said Police Inspector B Jadhav of the Kurla police station.

The taxi had sped away towards Vakola. The pedestrians rushed Awhad to the Fauzia Hospital nearby and then he was transferred to Wockhardt Hospital. “He has suffered bruises on his left hand, legs and knees. We have registered a case of attempt to murder against the unidentified accused,” said Jadhav.
