Very soon movie-goers can see Osama bin Laden at a neighbourhood theatre, albeit fake. The filminnovatively titled,Tere Bin Ladenis a farcical comedy about an enterprising Pakistani journalist who hatches a fake Bin Laden tape to achieve his American dream of working with CNN. Of course serious ramifications ensue when the White House gets involved and dispatches an overzealous secret agent on the journalists trail.
Written and directed by debutant Abhishek Sharma,Tere Bin Laden is produced by Walkwater Media,an enterprise owned by sisters Pooja Shetty Deora and Aarti Shetty. The first teaser trailer of the film hit Youtube couple of weeks back and has already got nearly 25,000 hits. Pakistani singer-actor Ali Zafar makes his Bollywood debut as the journalist while newbie actor Pradyuman Man Singh is the fake Osama.
Casting Osama was excruciatingly painful confesses Deora who auditioned many actors before settling in for Singh. We were looking for an actor who not only resembles Bin Laden but also has great acting skills. We believe it has worked, says Deora.
Incidentally, the film was initially titled,I Shot Osama. But that was nixed for its serious risqué tone. Our film is essentially a quirky comedy and the title had to represent the kind of film we were making. After several internal battles over the title of this film we arrived at Tere Bin Laden which literally means Without you Bin Laden. It conveys that the film is about a fake Bin Laden and also sounds comic, says Deora.
The shoot of the film was completed in 41 days with a six-month pre-production period that entailed extensive research on the language and Bin Laden. The makers also recreated Karachi in Mumbai studios as the entire film is set in the Pakistani city.
While the producers are aiming for a summer release (July is a tentative month),Tere Bin Laden will first traverse through film festivals the world over.
