Increasing attacks on state government and IAS officials in the state has prompted the government to set up a high-level committee to look into such cases and ensure adequate preventive steps. The panel headed by the Additional Chief Secretary (Home) will hod its first meeting in Mumbai on Saturday.

“There has been a rise in the number of assaults on government officials and employees during duty. Such attacks is likely to demoralise the officers and affects their work,” said the GR issued by joint secretary P T Gaud.

The most recent incident was in Satana taluka of Nashik district where villagers protesting for better quality water tried to burn alive the Zilla Parishad CEO after dousing him with petrol. In the same district,Additional Collector Yashvant Sonawane was burnt alive, allegedly by the oil mafia, this January. There are numerous instances of officers’ faces being blackened or them being assaulted by political workers.

The committee will monitor such cases and ensure that an FIR is registered immediately against the accused, investigations are done and a chargesheet filed within a stipulated period.

The other members of the committee include the DGP,Principal Secretary (Services) of General Administration Department,Additional DGP (Law and Order) and the officer who has been attacked. The respective department’s additional chief secretary/ principal secretary or secretary would also be a member of this committee.
