HC allows mandal to screen terror documentary

Bombay High Court permitted a Thane ganesh mandal on Tuesday to screen a documentary which police said could cause a communal flare-up.

Bombay High Court permitted a Thane ganesh mandal on Tuesday to screen a documentary which police said could cause a communal flare-up. ‘Atankwadacha Gulabi Chehra’ by Hindu Jagruti Sarvajanik Shri Ganesh Utsav Mandal speaks of girls being lured into marriage by certain persons and then forced to be a part of extremist organisations.

After police issued the mandal a notice,it moved HC.

Police and the mandal held a meeting during court hours on Tuesday, after which it was decided to delete certain controversial words from the script.

A division bench of justices A M Khanwilkar and R Y Ganoo said there was nothing objectionable about the term ‘dahashatvad’ (terrorism.)

“Dahashatvadi is a generic term, which refers to a person indulging in acts of violence to destabilise the country. If there had been a reference to any particular community, the objection would have been understandable,” Justice Khanwilkar said.

He also noted that the term “terrorist” was used in official communication and in Parliament.

The petitioners submitted that they did not intend to disturb peace and agreed to show posters and pictures to be used to police.
