The Mumbai Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) Thursday caught an assistant electrical engineer red handed while he was allegedly accepting a Rs One lakh bribe. The amount was an instalment for a total of Rs Four lakh that was allegedly demanded. The complainant had approached the accused Gajanan Rathod (40), a public servant, responsible for providing permission to install a lift in a building for which he allegedly demanded the bribe.
An official said that the complainant works as a project manager in his wifeâs company that deals with work related to installing and maintaining electrical installations like lifts.
For installing a lift in a building, the complainant had submitted a file to the Santacruz inspection unit of the power department of the state government in October.
In connection with the said work, the complainant had approached Gajanan Rathod, the assistant electrical engineer on October 29. He alleged that Rathod demanded a bribe of Rs 1.8 lakhs and asked him to pay Rs 50000 bribe immediately. The complainant however did not want to pay a bribe and approached the Anti Corruption Bureau.
After verifying his complaint, ACB asked the complainant to contact the public servant again. Accordingly, when he called up Rathod on November 12, he said now he will have to pay twice the amount and demanded Rs Four lakhs. He asked the complainant to get an advance payment of Rs One lakh.
Accordingly, ACB asked him to appear before Rathod with Rs One lakh and as he was accepting the money on Thursday, he was trapped red handed by ACB officials in the presence of independent witnesses as per procedure. He was arrested and produced before the court on Friday, an official said.
