The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will award the work of constructing twin tunnels to be part of its ambitious Goregaon-Mulund Link Road project to Mumbai-based J Kumar Infra Projects Limited and Hyderabad-based NCC Limited, which have been carrying out the Metro Line 2-B’s pending work including on the yellow line.
Pegged at a cost of Rs 6,301 crore, the twin tunnels are going to be a pivotal part of the link road project, the overall cost of which is Rs 8,500 crore. The tender for the project was floated in October 2022. The BMC received responses from eight bidders on June 30 this year, after the deadline was extended nearly four times as the initial response was inadequate.
Three firms—NCC Limited, Larsen and Toubro and Afcons Infrastructure Limited—were shortlisted and the final executing agency was finalised on Friday.
P. Velrasu, additional municipal commissioner (projects), said the tunnels would pass below the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and cover a complex topography of hillocks, forest and farmlands. The depth of the tunnels would vary between 20 and 220m. Made with a tunnel-boring machine, they will be equipped with advanced ventilation and lighting systems along with electric surveillance.
“The proposed alignment of this tunnel is along the shortest stretch and will save substantial travel time as well as fuel. Once completed, this project will decongest the traffic load in suburban Mumbai. The construction work is expected to start from October 2023 and it will take 60 months to get completed,” Velrasu told The Indian Express on Thursday. The overall length of the road connecting Goregaon in the western suburbs with Mulund in the eastern suburbs will be around 12.2 km, while the tunnels will be 4.7 km long.
The road project is being divided into four phases. The ongoing first and second phases include the construction flyovers, traffic interchanges and widening of roads. The twin tunnels will be constructed in the third phase.
