In 1998, eight-year-old Sushant Divgikar was in the news for having the largest collection of Barbie dolls in Mumbai. A toy that is associated with girls, Divgikar, however, never faced any problems picking up the ones he wanted to. “I was given the independence to get the toy I desired,” recalls the 24-year old. This freedom to be who he is has given him the confidence to represent India at the Mr Gay World competition, to be held in Rome between August 24-31.
The Bandra boy’s childhood says a lot about how “transparent and understanding” his parents were. He never had to face the issues that many people from the LGBTI community do when they want to come out.
Divgikar has always been an achiever. In school, he was a swimming champion and games captain. In his career, he has been a VJ, choreographer and singer. It was in 2011 that Divgikar declared his sexual orientation on national television on UTV’s Big Switch. “I plan to open an institute in future that will provide support groups for homosexuals, both closeted and open,” says Divgikar, who is currently pursuing his double post-graduation in psychology. He wants it to be an open-for-all institute where people can come and share their stories without being scared or judged.
