Four workers of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) were electrocuted in Thane on Sunday morning while on their way to show support for election candidates in the area. Six others were rushed to the CS Hospital and their condition is stable.
According to Kalwa police officers, the workers were campaigning for the candidate from ward 44 of the Thane Municipal Corporation when the incident took place. Officers said the activists were carrying steel flagpoles and one of them touched a live electricity wire on the road.
Thane NCP leader and legislator Jitendra Awhad called it a sad incident that marred the election campaigning in Thane on Sunday. He said he spent three hours with the families of the victims, all regular NCP workers.
They were coming to Kalva to meet a party candidate and were playing with the flagpoles, said Awhad. The flagpoles were for party flags. One of them accidentally touched a transformer wire and got electrocuted. As the others went to help him, they got electrocuted too, Awhad said, adding that he had assured the victims families that he would assist them in obtaining compensation.
We have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the matter. We will record the statements of the activists who were accompanying the deceased and find out whether there was any negligence involved, said Anil Sonde, senior police inspector of Kalwa police station.
